Programs are open to Wayne residents only, and are held at the Main library of the Wayne Public Library, unless specified.

Winter/Spring Times 2017

Register online from the Events Calendar by clicking on the date of the program and title of the event.

Winter/Spring Story Time Sessions will begin the week of February 6th, 2017 and continue through the week of April 24th, 2017.

**There will be No Tot-Time and Story Times Time on Monday, February 20th (President's Day), Monday, March 6th (library event) and the week of April 17th (Spring Recess.) 

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES:
  • Online registration begins on Monday, January 23rd, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. Register online by clicking on the Events calendar for the week of January 23rd to the left or visit Events above. Sessions are open to Wayne residents only with a valid WPL card. Class size is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Please try to be on time.
  • Sessions will only be held if three or more children are in attendance.
  • If you cannot attend weekly Story Times, please inform the Children's Department staff, so that others on the Waiting List may attend.

Kids Helping Kids - Open to students in elementary, middle and high school who attend Wayne Schools.

Wednesday Evenings: 5:30 - 7:15 PM - Location Story Time Room - Main Library

Tutoring services by the Wayne Valley High School National Honors Society will take place in the Children's Department of the Main Library for the middle school and high school students who attend Wayne schools. Students may attend one or both days. Sessions will not be held when there is no school in Wayne. You must email:wvalleynhs@gmail.com for more information.

Picture Book Craft Club: the Very Hungry Caterpillar

Monday, March 20, 2017 from 6:30—7:00 PM

Join us for our new program which kicks off with a celebration of the classic picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This bimonthly program will feature some of the very best picture books, which will inspire children to create a one-of-a-kind craft. Open to Wayne children age 3 — 1st grade. Parent/guardian must stay with child(ren) to help complete the craft.

Celebrate N.J. Maker's Day - Building Rafts and Boats!

Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 12:00—1:00 PM

Children will build rafts & boats to Keep the Gingerbread Man Safe and Dry - Based on the story, kids will construct boats using simple materials (straws, paper, foam, foil, etc.). Children will figure out what works best and test their creations in tubs of water. Open to Wayne children in grades kindergarten – 1st.

Catapult Making with Peeps!

Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 1:30—2:30 PM

Children will construct catapults and practice launching various items such as Legos, erasers and lead up to marshmallow Peeps. Children will talk about why certain items launch farther than others and actually have tape lines down to measure their distances. Open to Wayne children in grades 2—4.

National Library Week Contest April 9-15

Celebrate National Library Week with a “Book in a Jar” contest! Can you guess what book is shredded in a jar? Guess the correct book title and win a small prize!


Spring Craft with Miss Melissa

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 4:00—4:30 PM

Spring is here! You’re in for a “tweet” at our Spring Craft. Children will listen to a story and create a unique craft. Open to Wayne children age 3—1st grade. Parent/guardian must stay with the child to help complete the craft.

Chess Club For Kids

Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 2:00—3:00 PM

Kids can learn the game of Chess! Have fun while learning a game that uses math, logic, and problem solving skills. Open to Wayne children in grades 2nd—4th. The Chess Club meets once a month at the library.

Sole Hour Workshop

Monday, April 17, 2017 (No school in Wayne) from 1:30—2:30 PM

Join us for an amazing SOLE (self organized learning environment) workshop. Children self-direct the area of their investigations as they learn and practice critical learning skills in a fun one hour session. Open to Wayne children ages 7—10. **Space is limited.** Wayne Public Schools are closed.

Children's Matinee Movie: The Secret Life of Pets  ©Universal 2016

Tuesday, April 18, 2017 (No school in Wayne) 2:00—3:30 PM (approx.)

Two mismatched mutts get lost in NYC due to their feuding, and must find their way home. During their journey, they encounter a vicious bunny who plans to lead a group of abandoned pets on a mission of revenge against humanity. Open to Wayne children ages 4 & up. Movie is rated PG and Runtime is 90 minutes.

Create Poetry

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 (No school in Wayne) 2:15—3:00 PM

In honor of National Poetry Month, poet and English professor Scott Wordsman will lead a writing workshop, introducing students to fun and exciting poems, as well as lead discussions on different styles of rhyming. Each student will get to write and bring home their own unique poem by the workshop's end! Open to Wayne children in grades 2nd–4th.

Read to a Dog

Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 4:00 - 5:00 PM (No School in Wayne)

Children ages 5 through 10 will build confidence and improve reading skills when the therapy dog they read to listens to their stories. Two therapy dogs will be on hand to listen carefully. They will not criticize or correct, but will patiently allow the child to read at his or her own pace. Each child will read from his or her own book for about 10—15 minutes.

Edible Spring Chick Snack & Story

Friday, April 21, 2017 (No School in Wayne) 1:00—1:30 PM

Come to the library make a fun spring chick with Miss Natalie, Shoprite Dietician. Open to Wayne children ages 5—8.

Engineering For Kids: 3-2-1...Blastoff!

Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 6:00—6:45 PM

For this activity, students will get a glimpse into the world of rocketry and aerodynamics. Students will design a model rocket using a straw, clay, and paper fins and will test the design of their rocket using a pneumatic-launching device. Open to Wayne children in grades kindergarten – 2nd.

Music With Kurt GaLLagher

Friday, April 28, 2017 from 10:00—10:45 AM

A special session for just the little ones. Come sing Row “Row Row your Boat”, the “ABC song” and much more! Open to children from 6 months to kindergarten.
