Winter/Spring Story Times 2019

Register online from the Events Calendar by clicking on the date of the program and title of the event.
Sessions begin the week of February 4, 2019 and continue through the week of April 22, 2019.
There will be NO Story Times on Monday, February 18th (President’s Day),
Monday, March 11th (library event) and the week of April 15th (Spring Recess).

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES:
  • Online registration begins on Tuesday, January 22, 2019  at 7:00 a.m. Register online by clicking our Events Calendar on the upper left side of the page and then select the date and title of the program.
  • Sessions are open to Wayne residents only with a valid WPL card.
  • Class size is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Space is limited so children may only register for one (1) storytime session.
  • Please try to be on time.
  • Sessions will only be held if three or more children are in attendance.
  • If you cannot attend weekly Story Times, please inform the Children's Department staff, so that others on the Waiting List may attend.

Kids Helping Kids - (September - May), Open to students in elementary, middle and high school who attend Wayne Schools.
Tuesdays & Wednesdays 2:45 - 4:30 P.M. 
Wednesday Evenings: 5:30 - 7:15 PM - Location Story Time Room - Main Library

Tutoring services by the Wayne Valley High School National Honors Society will take place in the Children's Department of the Main Library for the middle school and high school students who attend Wayne schools. Students may attend one or both days. Sessions will not be held when there is no school in Wayne. You must email:wvalleynhs@gmail.com for more information. 



PAWS for Reading with Therapy Dogs at the Preakness Branch Library

2019 Dates:  April 1 - May 13 - June 3 - November 4 - December 2

Children ages 5 through 10 read to a therapy dog for 10 minute sessions. Session starts at 3:30 p.m.

Please register beginning December 8th at 10 AM  online by selecting the program date on the calendar.  - Pre-registration is required!

Chess Club for Kids

Saturday, April 6, 2019 from 12:30—1:30 PM

Kids can learn the game of Chess! Have fun while learning a game that uses math, logic, and problem-solving skills. Open to Wayne children in grades 2nd—4th. The Chess Club meets once a month at the library.

American Sign Language is Easy as 1-2-3!

Nativdad, is a senior from PCTI - Passaic County Technical Institute and has studied ASL since freshman year. She is an active advocate for people that are deaf and hard of hearing. Come join us if you would like to learn some American Sign Language. Open to Young Adults in 4th-12th grade.

Knit & Knosh for Kids

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 4:00—5:00 PM

Learn the basic skills to create fun knitted projects! Knitting Club is open to beginners or those who want to improve their skills. NOTE: Please bring your own kids Knitting Needles: 7”-Size 10/6mm or anything close to this would be preferred for little hands. Open to Wayne kids in grades 2nd through 4th.

Read to a Dog

Thursday, April 11, 2019 from 4:00—5:00 PM

Wayne children ages 5 through 10 will build confidence and improve reading skills when the therapy dog they read to listens to their stories. Each child will read from his or her own book for about 10—15 minutes.

Come to the library make a fun spring snack with Shoprite Dietician Miss Natalie. Open to Wayne children ages 21/2—5.

Telescope Night -  presented by Pearl Observatory

Monday, April 15, 2019 from 7:30—8:30 PM

Come to the library for a chance to look into a telescope and see the mountains, valleys and craters of our moon. View the clouds and moons of Jupiter, see Saturn and its rings, plus other wonders of the universe. Open to Wayne children ages 5—11.

Create Poetry

Tuesday, April 16, 2019 from 10:30—11:15 AM

In honor of National Poetry Month, poet and English professor Scott Wordsman will lead a writing workshop, introducing students to fun and exciting poems, as well as lead discussions on different styles of rhyming. Each student will get to write and bring home his or her own unique poem by the workshop's end!

Morris Museum presents: Musical Instruments from Around the World

Sometimes a cappella is not enough—so what can we use to make music besides our voices? Participants will experience a multi-sensory exploration of music by seeing, hearing and touching instruments as diverse as the Brazilian cuica, Polynesian pu’ili sticks, American Indian flute, and a German zither, and learn a bit about the culture that created each instrument.

Magical Unicorn Craft with Miss Melissa

Monday, April 22, 2019 from 6:30—7:00 PM

April 9th was National Unicorn Day. Let’s celebrate these magical creatures with a craft! Children will listen to a unicorn story, create a unique craft to take home and enjoy a sweet treat!

Open to Wayne children ages 3 — 6. Parent/guardian must stay with the child to help complete the craft. Register online beginning Friday, April 12th at 7:00 AM.



Helmet Safety for Children

Monday, April 29, 2019 from 4:00—4:30 PM

Children will learn how to keep their brain healthy by wearing helmets when engaged in wheeled sports.  Children will view a video and learn tips for wearing their helmets correctly.

Music with Kurt Gallagher

Shhh! Tiger is sleeping and we don’t want to wake him up! Very quietly, we will listen to the story Don’t Wake Up the Tiger by Britta Teckentrup and create a craft inspired by this tiger tale. Open to Wayne children ages 3 — 6.

Parent/guardian must stay with the child to help complete the craft.

Children's Ballet

The McKenna School of Dance, under the direction of Cindy Griffenkranz, will present a wonderful ballet for Wayne children ages 4 & up. Children must be able to sit quietly for the entire performance.
